Unpaid leave rejected as an intern

So, I've been interning in a certain company for a few months. In the tail-end of it, and about to go into university. There's stuff like orientations, pre-admissions tests, and medical checkups, i.e. un-frivolous things that I can NOT miss. I sent an email to the head of department and HR (as per protocol). My email clearly stated that these were prerequisites and determined my university admissions and campus life. Lo and behold, just received a reply that my unpaid leaves for these events are “rejected”. Like, what? Do they think I'm going to be like: “Oh… crap, I guess I'm NOT going go to a compulsory admissions test (and by extension, university), because my boss for 2 more weeks is NOT 'allowing' me to take leave that they're NOT going to pay me for.” How can you even reject unpaid leave? What do I even say in response to…

What do I even say in response to this? I'm definitely going anyway, to be clear.
