[US] I don’t understand the Stockholm Syndrome-esque concern for giving your two weeks or outright quitting.

If you become anxious when thinking about how your manager/coworkers/company owner will react, please understand they don’t care about you. They only care about the inconvenience you’re causing. I’ve worked in corporate America for 10 years and food and retail before that. It has all been draining and frustrating and all of my managers titled from Store Manager to GM to VP to CEO are the same brand of manipulative assholes. Don’t feel bad. You aren’t bad. Take care of you and yours. If you think your next employer will call for references, they won’t. It never happens unless they personally know your old boss, and even then it’s extremely rare. There’s no special “previous employment check” for anyone to refer to and you can even choose not to put employers on your resume. I’ve done it. Nobody cares [insert Dennis Nedry gif].
