Walked off the job yesterday

I walked off the job at UPS yesterday. It was my second job. Just had a baby and with him and my full time job I was stretched to thin. Yesterday was going to be my last day anyway. After finishing our usual assignment I was told that they were going to send me to help another crew due to me having the lowest seniority. I refused and told my supervisor that today was my last day and if they wanted to waste my time like that after we were already done with our assignment I’ll just leave and quit on the spot. Supervisor didn’t like my response so he went to his boss. He comes back and basically blackmails me in saying if I don’t stay, then the entire crew has to stay regardless if I quit now on the spot.

Me, feeling like I couldn’t do that to the group, decided to stay. I texted one of my crew mates when they were dropped off at the gate to let me know so I knew they were in the clear. Once confirmed, I walked out. Supervisor was mad but I told him that blackmail was really foul on their part and really made me lose what little respect I had left for him. The fact he still threatened me with job abandonment knowing it was my last day was amusing.

Also a bit of a rant with the UPS union. I know this sub is pro union but my only union experience has been with UPS and it hasn’t been great, at least not for part-timers. From my point of view, the only useful thing about the union is that it protects people who call off once or twice a week from work from getting fired, and of course the lazy.

The reason why I didn’t want to stay behind and help was due to our crew always being understaffed. If the off chance we do get help they send us people who just stand around and don’t contribute. Of course our supervisor is spineless and will never tell these vetted guys to work so he’ll just over work us even though the help if literally standing in-front of him.
