So i worked at this mechanic shop in CA it was my first real mechanic gig after trade school, did work at some oil change places but nothing with major repairs. So this job was a family shop handed down generations owner loved the work clearly his son however had no intention of keeping the shop after his dad retired. anyway we get a ton of classic cars come in really awesome as i love working on all kinds of cars but being able to work on american classics plus its great experience. It's a small crew in total 5 tecs, we get a lot of problem cars as most shops do but i get reduced down to oil changes and cleaning the shop, and changing tired and balancing them for my first 3 months here. finally i get to work on a 94 chevy c4 corvette. awesome problem is with these older chevys the key is programed to each car and the owner couldnt afford any work to be done, so what does the owner do? He starts to work on it anyway i get volentold by the owners son we'll call him james, james knows this car is in terrible condition likely to break. while trying to get the car to start it wont turn over so i diagnose a bad starter. changed it out and car still didnt start come to find the ECM was bad (engine control moduel) but because of the year and make of the car its really hard to find these and oh yeah the owner not having any money so what does the owner decied to do? Yet again we start to do the work so this ECM is burried under the dash bored had to take out both front seats and the entire dashboard, rip out the steering column finally changed it out and start putting it back together and finish the job i left to get the key to try it and i get busy with something else and when i get back apperently james thought he'd check himself mind you he knows nothing about cars. and locked the only copy of the key in the car and we still need to get new keys programed to the new ECM and blames me for locking the key inside. I get chewed out of course and back to doing only oil changed and tires. another month goes by and we get another beater in for new tires, i look at it and note the wheel studs are completely rusted out i tell the other tech “hey we shouldnt touch this it'll break” tell james and he says to do the job anyway, so i do go to take off the first stud and it snaps, oh shit but okay go for the second and it snaps so i stop tell james he says its okay take a lunch and we'll deal with it. when i get back i get chewed out by the owner again about how if i knew it was bad i shouldnt have touched it and told someone, i then told him i did tell james and he said to go ahead with it and james cuts me off and says he never authorized any work and whos the owner going to listen to a new 22 year old tech, or his own son. i get fed up and start working on another oil change. The owner keeps his nice old well kept and maintaind 72 dodge dart, so i go and clean it and wash it as asked and do any oil change i use the wrong oil weight and no one drives in half the time anyway then go and pack my tools and without saying anything after i load my tools in my car, i see james car on the side of the building and grab my tire core tool, used for takeing all the air out of a tire fast and decore all his tired and undo his oil drain plug. left and was asked why i wasnt coming anymore and laughed and called his sons a jackass who steals money to spend on his fiance who was in charge of our finances. everyone knew but shut up and i hung up and found a new job which paid better and i get treated like a person.
