Want to better understand the fast food problem

I’m at a McDonald’s on my way home and order a simple meal with a drink. I pay for it at one window and then go to the next window where a very nice teenage guy is making my stuff. He hands me my food order and drink. He repeats them back to me out loud and as he hands me the drink, it’s the wrong thing I ordered. I tell him that, show him my receipt and then ask if he can get me the drink I ordered. He’s like no older than 17. He pauses for a little bit, looks me in the eye and starts to tear up. And then he lowers his voice and says “will you please still just take this drink I gave you?”. I do because I could feel that desperation and I’m not the one who wants to be a jerk for…

Trying to understand from you wise people here what’s going on at that McDonald’s to make somebody look so scared like that?
