Working a flexible remote job since Dec 21. Was spart from family for 6months due to visa process, hence decided to risk it.
I have been working 45 days in another country using VPN to work a remote UK based job. If anyone interest, VPN router is GL-AR300M and VPN is wireguard server in UK called GB36 by MullVad.
Turns out after 45 days, IT department raised a security incident saying “IMPOSSIBLE TRAVEL” (microsoft cloud defender for apps). For some reason my VPN router leaked the IP or DNS today at 1600 GMT for a millisecond.
Told my boss my landlord has a VPN router, and he changed the location to Pakistan which led to account suspension of office365.
Lets see how security investigation goes. Better start applying for jobs that actually don't care about where you work.
Any advice besides advice for not breaking the rules? I am still here in foreign country waiting for what happens next on Tuesday.
Someone suggested to set custom DNS which is now showing all UK. Lets see try 2, if that succeeds, yeah.
Previous incidents you might enjoy:
- Incident 1: flight missed worked two days in another country, account restored by boss. He was surprisingly chill about it.
- Incident 2: took work laptop for emailing to MP's in another country. Was in holidays though, security was ok as I told my Boss i was on holidays.
- Incident 3 (current): Sysadmin “foreign country logged in again, hence account temporarily blocked” due to impossible travel. Don't know what happened, had internet kill switch on as well VPN running the whole time.
Any good advice appreciated on how to handle it. Boss relationship good with me as I give him what he wants and when he wants. All he said on whattsapp was “lets talk on Tuesday” when I relayed this story to him bout the fake landlord in glasgow using a VPN router in a shared accomodation.
God its hard to stay away from family in another country.
