Hi, 17 year old here.
My first job was at an ice cream parlor for the minimum $7.25/hr+ tips. There were two kinds of shifts that I could have: Opening (10am to 4pm) and Closing (4pm to 9pm on Sunday through Thursday, 4pm to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays). Now while the shift says 4 till 9/10, that’s when the store closed. After it closed we would begin closing tasks.
On Sun-Thu closing shifts we’d usually get done between 9:30 and 9:45, but on Friday and Saturday we’d spend less time closing, since people usually stopped showing up after 9:30pm, so we’d be done between 10:15 and 10:30pm.
My current boss/managers have been much more informative of labor laws and told me that if I (a minor) work more than 6 hours at a time it’s illegal, and on some morning shifts at my new job they have been VERY careful with making sure I take the half hour break before I work 6 hours as well as making sure I don’t work past 10pm on a school night also.
I was 16 at my first job; was my old boss breaking any laws? (If any more information is needed I can provide)
