“We consider 9-9.5 hours each day typical around here”

I interviewed at a company (NMG Aerospace) for an engineering role. It sounded interesting enough and they had a nice facility. During my interview the engineering manager asked about how I structure my day and how much work I typically get done. I told him I set three realistic goals each day and usually get my work done in 8 hours or less. After all this is a salary position. He responds by saying that they consider 9-9.5 hours a day to be typical and that’s just how they’ve been doing it for years. Excuse me?! That was the biggest red flag during my interview. All that told me is the department is understaffed and a small team of people have been carrying far too much of the workload for too long. As if my commute alone wasn’t add an hour to the work day. Now they want an extra half days worth of work from me? In a 40 hour salary position? Haha no thank you!

I’m in my late twenties and want to use my time to enjoy my hobbies, be social, be healthy, and live MY life. NOT slave away for some company and those at the top.

They offered me a second interview and I turned them down.
