I see post after post where people have censored how much they make or how much they charge for their services. Or they talk in terms of percentages instead of dollar amounts (like, “my boss offered me a 5% raise” instead of “my boss offered me a $3k raise which would put me at $63k”. If we want to see real, meaningful change around how we view salary, this is the perfect place to abandon the old brainwashing that salary needs to be a secret.
Privacy concerns are real and valid. Please don't share if you don't feel comfortable, but I think the best thing we can do for our respective industries is start talking about our salaries. Some guy in AZ might realize he's making $15k less than the average, compared to what others are saying. It would be a good place to start looking into pay disparity (or maybe his company is just crappy like that and he should prioritize finding a new job). Or he might realize that a less stressful job he's fully qualified for pays more than he makes now.
