“We pay 17 an hour but…”

There’s a local sandwich chain in my area that is super popular with some amazing food. Their hiring ad always looked really good. They claim they start people at $17 an hour, and offer some other pretty decent stuff. Except, upon an interview with them while job hunting… I found out that they pay minimum wage until way down the road, and that $17 an hour is dependent on tips.. which they pool but distribute 1/4 of tips earned to new people. You don’t get your full share of tips until you’ve been there for a couple of years. I kind of laughed, and declined my job offer. Kind of seemed like a joke, and completely was false advertising.
