We should be remunerated for preparation and commute time.

Im having to do an upskilling course that’s held an hour away, my company is paying me for the hours I’m there but hasn’t factored in the 2 hours of commute… and when I raised that point they dismissed it. I see how this would create an issue with people who lived far from their desired workplace being overlooked because employers don’t want to pay extra for their commute but there must be some system that could remunerate based on average commute times or something. Also what’s the logic in getting to work early so we’re ready when our shift starts? That’s some slavemaster bullshit that too many of us accept as being reasonable – if they want us ready to roll the second our shift begins they ought to pay us for the extra 5-30 minutes of pre start tasks. Time is incomparably precious and by far the most…

Time is incomparably precious and by far the most valuable asset we have – if we’re devoting it to work related tasks we should be paid for every minute of it.

Perhaps we can opt to work off the clock without pay but that should never be an expectation.

Unfortunately while there are enough people wiling to put up with these conditions nothing will change.
