We switched you back to physical paychecks while you’re out on medical leave, come pick it up

I posted here before about the stand-in manager at my hotel job, which is normally the area manager for all the hotels owned by the investment company he works for, trying to pressure me to move a life-sustaining surgery to a time more convenient for him and his vacation time. Since then: I found out that was triggered by the fact that the other guy, who we all knew was training to be a manager at one of their other, bigger locations was actually lied to. He was brought in as a front desk guy they wouldn't have to train, so when he found out, he quit and was set to leave before the holidays. I went to my doctor to see about medical leave for my surgery, and due to other conditions rapidly worsening, I was put on medical leave effective immediately. I ended up having to tell this…

I posted here before about the stand-in manager at my hotel job, which is normally the area manager for all the hotels owned by the investment company he works for, trying to pressure me to move a life-sustaining surgery to a time more convenient for him and his vacation time. Since then:

  1. I found out that was triggered by the fact that the other guy, who we all knew was training to be a manager at one of their other, bigger locations was actually lied to. He was brought in as a front desk guy they wouldn't have to train, so when he found out, he quit and was set to leave before the holidays.
  2. I went to my doctor to see about medical leave for my surgery, and due to other conditions rapidly worsening, I was put on medical leave effective immediately. I ended up having to tell this area manager that I would be leaving for 2 months, regardless of when the surgery got rescheduled.
  3. A couple days after going out on medical leave, they appointed a new acting manager.

My paychecks have been set up as direct deposit since March of this year. My only banks are a credit union several states away, or one of those online-only banking services. I do not have a local, physical bank where I can physically deposit checks. I set up my direct deposit because- due to the formatting of their checks- the mobile deposit for my credit union couldn't read the info, and I had zero way of getting the money from my paychecks aside from going to a check cashing place, which doesn't help me pay online bills. I'd tried to open an account with a local credit union, but couldn't because my ID at the time was out of state.

Normally, I see my DD Tuesday night. Well, Tuesday night went by and…nothing. A holiday delay? Wednesday night- nothing. Today, Thursday morning rolls around, and still nothing, so I email accounting.

“In this payroll your check is not Direct Deposit, so please pick up your check from the hotel”

Right, so the person who is DISABLED AND OUT ON MEDICAL LEAVE is expected to make a special trip to pick up my physical paycheck, and not a soul bothered to inform me of this ahead of time. So now I have to:

A. Use my car. Oh! Wait, that's right! I don't even fucking own a car!

B. Use the public bus. Oh shit whoops, I'm in a wheelchair which I cannot move without someone else's assistance and cannot make it to and from my neighborhood's bus stop on my own.

C. Use Uber or Lyft, spending 30$ round trip (including 3$ tips) JUST for a 10-ish minute trip each way to pick up a paycheck. Wait, that's right! I only have 12$ to my name right now because I haven't gotten the money I was fucking expecting. Bummer.

Luckily, both my housemate and my partner also work there, except after my housemate went out on medical leave, they switched him from full time to only 1 day a week with no explanation. My partner only works Sat-Sun, so I would be waiting over a week to even SEE my paycheck.

Which cycles back to the above, I went with DD because I couldn't do mobile deposit, so now I would have to hope and pray it goes through. If it does? That's another however many days until it clears, if it doesn't? I now have to make extra trips (and find someone who can drive me for them) in order to open a credit union account here. So either way, severe delays when I have bills to pay at the start of the month, all because my employer decided to remove my Direct Deposit with no prior notice or… notice at all… expecting me to pick up a check at the job while out on medical leave.
