Weird bait-and-switch?

I recently took a “part time” bookkeeping job at a survey supply store. Starting pay is $18/hr. First it was offered to my mom by a friend of hers. She described it as working a couple hours a week. My mom suggested me instead. (I'm 25 in case this is relevant) When I accepted, it started being described to me more as a 35 – 39 hour a week job. It's not really what I'm looking for at the moment, but whatever. I still wanted to give it a try. My second day in, the owner tells me that his goal is to have just me and him running the entire company someday soon when I'm acquainted with the business. Right now there's only two other employees, both of which are leaving. I'd be taking over their work, on top of whatever else I'd be doing. The owner also bad-mouthed…

When I accepted, it started being described to me more as a 35 – 39 hour a week job. The owner also bad-mouthed both of these employees to me. He said that one is lazy, and the other acts like just an employee instead of a “team player”. Apparently, they had 30-something employees in 2007 that they laid off, and have been running with only 3 total since then??

Overall, I found it incredibly strange and overwhelming that I'm being told I'm going to be running an entire business with just the owner when I haven't even been really trained to do anything. Especially when I was not told about any of this prior to agreeing to the job that was originally described. They stressed that I have the potential to earn more, but it's not really about the money at this point. This is all on top of the right-wing, transphobic, and anti-Biden memes that are taped all over the walls here. That was probably my first red flag.

The last couple days I've sat in the office at the beginning of my shift for a good 2 hours waiting for the person who's supposed to train me to come in. Today I'm currently doing the same, writing this post and stressing about telling them that this isn't what I signed up for. I tend to minimize things in my head because I worry I'm overreacting. This is strange, right??
