Antiwork

Went to two line cook interviews today and told both I was unavailable on Sundays but had open availability otherwise. Was told by both that that’s going to be unacceptable.

Title. I hate restaurant work but things are getting tough for me and my partner so I agreed to look for a traditional job to be able to offer more financial support and they were the first to call. Both restaurants called me within 2 hours of filling out their “urgently hiring” applications on Indeed and set up an interview. I'm an avid racing enthusiast and Sundays are basically my holy day (F1, Indycar, NASCAR, WEC, and the sim racing league I'm in). Giving that up is a hard sell as it's the only thing I seem to enjoy lately and I spend all week looking forward to the races. I've been talking to a therapist who suggested I be more confident in my expectations with prospective employers and so I decided to stand my ground on my desired availability.

You'd have thought I punched each of the managers' grandmothers in the face by the way they looked at me when I mentioned refusing to work on Sundays. They pried as to why I wouldn't work and when I told them they both scoffed and treated my request as if it was a joke. “Well, Sunday is one of our busiest days so we're going to need you to be here if you work here.” I told them both I was unwilling to budge and reminded them I had open availability every other day of the week but they each doubled down and told me they were interested in hiring me but only if I worked the schedule they give me.

This is why I hate wage work. The employer thinks they own you and unless you're submissive they don't want you around. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth, so the search continues I guess. Just needed to vent about it.
