What do I say to an interviewer about not pursuing the career that comes along with my degree?

I personally didn’t pursue a career that my degree implied because the pay does not equate to the amount of schooling and internships you need. I just finished the degree to finish it and the degree is kind of specific to where there is basically one career path for it. I don’t want to say this to an interviewer so what can I say as to why I didn’t pursue that career? Thank you!
