Growing up, my Boomer Dad always gave me the horrible advice of the following:
- Don't rock the boat – troublemakers will be removed
- If you work hard and put in the extra effort, you'll be noticed and appreciated and promoted
This is coming from a man who worked 9-5 for 45 years. He was never promoted, he never rocked the boat, no one noticed him. So I vowed never to take this advice and funnily enough, rocking the boat got me noticed and promoted. I now never put in extra unpaid hours effort and still had no issues.
Recently, my friends kid (17f) was talking about starting her first job and my friend basically said the same rubbish to her. I butted in and said:
“Never ever be afraid to quit a job if they are disrespecting you or treating you like trash. Know your worth, you create the profit so dictate the terms on how you want to be treated. And for the love of God, if something isn't right or something isn't working, SAY SOMETHING AND DO IT IN WRITING, and above else – HR IS NOT YOUR FRIEND”.
Mate obviously wasn't too pleased, but she seemed to be happier knowing that she actually does have some power.
