What happened to regular job interviews?

Every job I've applied for in the last month or so has swapped interviews for 'applicant days': 9am – 4pm, unpaid. Doesn't matter the field, had them for sales, had them for law. I have one on Monday for a job that pays 24k. Full day, including a written exam (?), no compensation. And of course, they're only carried out during weekdays. I'm so tired of losing entire days to jump through hoops for a company that I don't even work for, and probably won't give me the position. Maybe this is common, and I just wasn't prepared for it. But I haven't had just a regular job interview in a long while now and I'm so tired of having to devote so much time and effort to /maybe/ have the chance at a job that /maybe/ keeps a roof over my head.
