What really happened in 2008?

Was 18 then, living in Canada. Somehow even back then I got the sense things were never going to be the same and low and behold…. The recession in the U.S was brutal. They told us it was ''not too bad'' in Canada and perhaps it wasn't but coincidentally the labor standard, pay, workers rights began to curiously decline in the following years. The trend has been felt in the U.S to this day and in many other countries. What exactly happened? and why do I get a sense whatever it did totally changed the employment standard? Other things to take note After the 2000's rent has exploded in cost Poverty is much more prevalent. We have blatant visible poverty like people living in tents that never was a thing before 2010. Working conditions are abysmal. Where are human resources? workplace deaths and injuries are way up.
