What should I have done in this situation??

Hey guys! I’m starting a new job soon and I was reminiscing over the job I left right before my college semester started and am worried I’ll run into this situation again and not be prepared. At my old job, if you were sick or something came up that was more important than your shift, you told your manager and hope she responded. If she did it was always ‘find someone to cover your shift or else you’ll have to come in’.

I’d always try and obviously fail because people only got a day or two a week off and wanted to have time to themselves so my job was threatened and most of the time I’d have to come in. Sometimes if I was really sick she’d try to make me get a doctors note.

I don’t have the best health insurance so I always told her if she’d be willing to pay for me to see the doctor I would but usually I’d be pressured into coming in unless I physically couldn’t.

I’d really love some advice on the whole “find someone to cover your shift” thing that managers do. What can I say to them that makes sense but doesn’t put me on their shit list? Thank you guys so much!!
