I’m in Ontario Canada, and I’m leaving an employer that I’ve been with for over 2 decades because my boss is listening to my coworker (that has only been there 2 years) who is repeatedly complaining that I’m not doing enough work.
Coworker comes from a very relaxed previous employer, he arrives and leaves at regular work hours whereas I am staying late every day working through lunch to get as much done as possible. He feels overworked and is saying it’s because I don’t do enough. In reality it’s because this is a different work environment than he is used to, and everyone here everyone is overworked.
I have already decided to leave, and have a new job lined up. The new job pays about 1/3 of the job I’m leaving. I can’t get a job in my field (technical) because when I started my career a licence wasn’t required, but I have two college degrees in the field. Now a licence is required but my employer is refusing to sign a letter of attestation for Skilled Trades Ontario because “The company has a policy of not giving references, and can only provide a record of employment”. This means I have all the experience I need to get my licence but no way to prove it.
The question is: should I tell them that I’m leaving because of a hostile environment and I can only make 1/3 of my regular income because of their refusal to give me the required letter? I’m hopeful that they will realize they have a liability due to forcing me into this situation and will consider paying me to go away.
