Am I wrong for going to HR?

I work at a very large multi-billion dollar manufacturing company. Employees are hired on as contract and get converted to full time based on “merit”. The problem is that all four people on my team who were hired after me got converted before me. At the beginning of the year my supervisor said I'd be converted in March. That didn't happen. Now he's saying I'm not getting converted and is encouraging me to apply to another department if I want to be full time. I can do everything those other four people can do and then some, I've worked so hard in the last year to get converted. My line leader told me I'm one of the best workers on our team. Now he's saying I'm not getting converted and is encouraging me to apply to another department if I want to be full time. I can do everything those other four people can do and then some, I've worked so hard in the last year to get converted. My line leader told me I'm one of the best workers on our team. It feels like I'm not valued on the team by my supervisor, especially because his comment made it seem like he wanted to get rid of me without actually firing me. He's also denied me bereavement time for my aunt who lived with me for six years and for who I was the primary caregiver, but he gave another coworker bereavement for a grandmother in another state. I don't want to believe that he's acting this way towards me because he knows I'm gay but I don't have any other explanation for this behavior.

My coworkers are all great and I don't want to leave the department just to be converted to full time. They're the ones who convinced me to write the email to HR. Was I wrong for bringing HR into this? They might not get back to me until Tuesday (2 business days) and I'm so nervous waiting on their reply.
