What’s actually a good way for companies/managers to show appreciation to their employees?

Besides pizza parties, free candy, and motivational corporate print-outs plastered all over. (Kidding) But seriously. Say you land a managerial role for the first time, what would you do to make sure your employees felt appreciated? Edit: change doesn’t happen overnight and your typical mid-level manager with only a handful of employees won’t be able to make such drastic changes right away.
