So I've been job hunting for a couple of years now, with almost no success. I'm a white guy named Willie, and I've never thought much of it, but every so often some one online will see that, especially on social media and call me the N word or refer to me as “Boy”. I'd never given it much thought until I was gaming a few weeks ago and some dude went on a racist slur filled rant towards me. I woke up in the middle of the night and thought, “I wonder if people over look my resume because they think I'm black”. The next day I dropped the “ie” from my resume, on line profiles, and applications. From Willie to Will. With in a week I was getting regular call backs and interviews, and in just a couple of weeks have received multiple job offers. My LinkedIn went from 1 or 2 hits a month to 4 or 5 a week. I talked to a couple of people I know who work HR and they practically laughed at me, saying they thought I would have known to drop the IE years ago, and both said when they see Willie on an application they assume it's a black guy. It's really made me more aware of how racist hiring practices are, and I really feel for black people with authentic names that represent their heritage. It's pretty messed up
