where are the “on calls”

To any and all super and managers, specifically schedule makers, y'all need to start scheduling people on call that way when there is a call out that person can cover the shift. When done correctly, this process can reduce work stress and anxiety brought on by worry of termination due to calling out. Also, it doesn't mean having that same person on call 24/7, rotate the schedule. This was never a problem when I worked at a locally owned bbq restaurant. If you had a legit problem and needed to call out, you could and the person on call took over your shift. Even if they didn't show up, it still wasn't a big deal because there were already one or two extra people on schedule anyhow. No one should have to worry about there job because they have a debilitating condition that literally renders them unable to move.
