Where is this data sourced from?

I've seen a number of posts in this sub that talk about cost of living with links providing estimated hourly wages or yearly salary needed to live in a given state (in the US) I'm wondering where these metrics are coming from, or if anyone could point me towards some unbiased sources estimating the necessary wage needed for a given area. Currently no one on my team is making enough to live within commuting distance of plant. We're pulling together to ask for a raise across the board that matches the cost of living and are currently compiling data to help justify the raise. (Hence the original question) We're all willing to look for better opportunities with new employers should it come down to it, but our current employer has a lot of incentives that make it work trying first.
