Who cares about your mental health?

This happened 3 years ago, but the topic came up today, so here I am. I was working for a short-staffed nonprofit in the Twin Cities, so I was doing 3 jobs instead of the normal 2 jobs. Literally had a nervous breakdown from stress and had to check myself into the local psych ward. Spent about a week there, came home, took another couple of days to manage, and went back to work.

Was back about 2 weeks and doing okay when my boss asked me to discuss something in her office.

She told me she needed me to take on some additional tasks because someone else had quit. I responded that I didn’t have the bandwidth to do so, and she did know I’d been under psychiatric care the previous month, right?

“Yes, but that was your vacation time and you’re better now, right?”

I quit two months later and took a less stressful (and worse paying, but oh well) job. Best decision ever.
