Seriously. I have a master's degree and years of experience as a university lecturer and college adjunct instructor. I used to be sick of stringing together part-time jobs to try and earn a living, NOW I can't even find a goddamn part-time job.
Worker shortage my ass. TEACHER SHORTAGE my ass. Yeah, let me pay $15,000 of my OWN MONEY to take two additional years of social justice and research methods classes for a teaching credential that may or may not even be employable in that time.
I've been on unemployment the last 4 months because the semester at my school ended, and surprise surprise it was a PART-TIME HOURLY JOB without security of employment. School couldn't give me hours in the fall (I suspect they are not happy about my filing unemployment–most of the other teachers are elderly women receiving a pension, and teaching for fun), and now I'm fucked.
I've spent the past 4 months trying to find SOME kind of stable job. Worker shortage? WHAT worker shortage? And now here I am again, begging massah' for some of his butter biscuits 'cause I ain't got none. I'm being turned down left and right, and was just turned down today for a parks ranger job that I was really hopeful for. Even the adjunct positions that I used to loath aren't hiring, because California passed law AD705 in 2019, essentially crippling community college programs.
Cut a dog a break, jack.
