Why are employers making it so hard to work for them?

I put in my two week notice at a job I love yesterday. I repair surgical equipment and medical cameras- it’s been a perfect fit for me as I love the diagnostic aspect and sense of accomplishment with solving a difficult repair. The money starting out wasn’t bad either, but the benefits package and perks were amazing! Then we were bought out. Then we went public. Goodbye flex scheduling. Goodbye to paid meal breaks. Insurance price went up and quality went down. New hires being brought in at tenured rates. Capped annual raises at 2.5% while the CEO is granted $20 million in stock.

I love everyone I work with, my direct management has been amazing with helping us develop new skills and experience, I genuinely take pride in my job and do feel like what I do has a degree of actual impact… but the last straw was when one of the new hires, making $0.25 less an hour than me, asked me to show them how to change the blade in an Exacto knife.

Put my resume on indeed and clicked ready to work- I had an offer with a 33% salary increase and paid top tier benefits by lunch. My letter was on my bosses desk at 1:37. I’m sad I’ll be flushing the last two years of experience down the toilet as I’ve been working on very specialized tools- but being able to take care of myself and my family in this fucked up world is more important.

I’ll still be servicing medical equipment but in a much less intensive field. I’ll be on the road all over my beautiful state one week a month in a company provided truck. They’ve already sent me a welcome package- thanks for the muffins Aaron!
