Why are small business owners held in such high regard?

Two of my worst jobs were family owned, small businesses. They treated people like absolute shit. High expectations, low pay and zero respect. Ever been ganged up on for a laugh by two brothers? It's not fun. Yet, the plight of small businesses is always used as a defense against raising the minimum wage. Why are they special? If they can't pay a living wage, that's on them.
