Why are we being worked to death?

Remove this post if it is unrelated, but what is going on America. I'm a full time college student pursuing 16 credits a semester, I work 20 hours a week at a 20.00 dollar an hour pharmacy technician job, and I STILL live with my parents. Just renting a room in someone's house at my locations cost almost 1000 DOLLARS A MONTH. If I decided to move out, I'd either have to work more hours (which im already barely managing the hours I work now without affecting my school), or spend 60-70 percent of my monthly income on rent, which doesn't leave me enough for food, car insurance, other expenses, or any money to help save up to pay for college. I would completely have to forget the concept of having a life outside of school or work, which is absolutely ridiculous. Why is this the norm? Anyone who is going to college and isn't currently working to pay off their debt are accumulating thousands of dollars a semester. Each of my undergrad semesters are around 5000 thousand, and that's not factoring in parking (which is over 300 dollars a year), gas, books, or anything else. I'm only going to college so that I can avoid living this kind of lifestyle when I'm older because I want time for me and my kids. Does it really get any better?

TLDR: Living is way too expensive and I have zero life because of it.
