Why are workers with jobs that absolutely do not require them to move, required to stand for their entire shift?

I’m getting my first job this summer. I’m applying to be a cashier, and I’m just wondering why cashiers aren’t allowed to sit on a stool or something? What benefit is there for them being standing?
