i have a year of cook experience. everywhere in my town needs line cooks. i’ve applied to FIFTEEN JOBS and haven’t heard anything back. i’ve gone in person and spoken to FIVE MANAGERS that i had applied to online and hadn’t heard from, “we’ll get back to you we’d love to have you on!” nothing. then i reach out again and i’m ghosted. nothing in my shitty mall is hiring, small town and there’s like 10 stores so yeah understandable i guess. clothing stores like ross or bealls outlet have signs saying they need people but when i apply or speak to someone it’s “you don’t have retail experience but there’s x and x restaurant that would need your skills!” YEAH I DONT HAVE RETAIL EXPERIENCE I CANT GET HIRED ANYWHERE!
i worked as a cook in the town i go to university in, im home for the summer. my parents needed ALL my savings to keep afloat, my younger brother is homeschooled cause we are out of range for busses and they can’t afford the daily gas. they finished their mortgage thank god cause they’d be foreclosed on if they didn’t.
i have nothing left, they have nothing left. and FAFSA isn’t giving me a penny this year cause they say i don’t need any help. everything i had went to my parents, so we can have AC and gas and electricity and phone service and make car payments, and television. we don’t have internet. we feel guilty for the $50 a month for TV cause it’s now a luxury. i don’t think i’ll be able to go back to university, and the tuition is only $2000, dorm $2100. cheap university! anything i had that i could have paid for a semester and at least got back to a stable income is gone. i could have done the payment plan my college offers and paid $820 a month. but i don’t even have the $820 for the first payment so i can’t even do it.
why am i not being hired? my boyfriend is getting 10 hours a week down from 40, he works at a 5 star restaurant as a server and even fucking applebees won’t hire him. my cousin in tampa is also dropping out of community college cause her job shut down and can’t get hired either, IN TAMPA!!! i’m a cook, i know how to use every appliance, im quick, i’ll take minimum wage, i’ll be constantly on call.. i’m so beaten down.
when i walked into chilis inquiring about my application, there is ONE SINGLE OTHER COOK, and he was EXCITED cause he thought he would be getting someone else back there with him. nope. i found him on facebook and he said they’re not hiring me cause they don’t need anyone else?! then why have applications open and a sign outside saying you’re urgently hiring?! he threw a fit about it and they promised a raise to shut him up.
fuck. i’m so broke. i’m so stuck. everything is so difficult.
