Why do some people create unnecessary work for themselves?

So I have a very nice comfortable non-stressful job. Basically, we get paid the national average salary and are not based on performance as long as the task needed are done. Basically it doesn’t matter if I do X and you go the extra mile, we are both going to get paid the same, there is not really any progression in the field so no chance of promotion so basically no real incentive to do more than the bare minimum. I LOVE IT. However I notice a lot my colleagues create unnecessary work for themselves but I don’t get it, why? Why not just do the bare minimum so that you don’t get fired?
