Why do they get so pissed when you need a sick day?

I feel like a good litmus test for any job is how they deal with a sick day. I’ve been working at a new job for a few weeks and I wasn’t feeling well so I told my supervisor the night before I want to take the next day off to try to recover. Already worked 40 hours for the week and have been busting my butt as well but I know my body, I needed to rest since I have to wait 90 days for insurance benefits so I want to try a cheaper recovery method if possible (still missing a day of pay as sick pay benefits haven’t kicked in yet either.) I feel like a good litmus test for any job is how they deal with a sick day. My supervisor replied to tell her again in the morning before my shift how I felt. My shift is pretty early, so this would require me to wake up before my start time to “confirm” I’m still unwell. Couldn’t I simply show up to work if that’s the case and tell them I got better? Why should I need to do this when I said before I went to bed how I was feeling and did this because I knew how early the shift starts?

I’ve already noticed this place works everyone to the bone but most of my direct supervisors are good people so I’ve kept at it and they all seem to hate the woman I had to deal with as she’s a corporate bozo. Now I’m really questioning my loyalty as I’ve pushed my body to the limits for their 10 hour shifts and erratic work schedules. If you are sick, you shouldn’t be treated like a criminal.
