So a couple weeks ago, I applied for an IT position that is about 45 minutes from where I live. After reading the posting and figuring I would fit, and they compensation they were offering was $60,000-$75,000 a year, I was like awesome! Let's apply!
Fast forward to Wednesday last week, I interviewed for the job. Assumed it went well because I made it to the final interview, which was Monday this week. I received a call from them this morning, and I was like 'Here we go, moment of truth!'. Didn't want to get my hopes up, because I have been here multiple times, just to get picked over by someone with more experience. I get that, IT can be rough at times, especially when trying to switch.
Anyways, the recruiter I had been speaking to, told me that it was courtesy call to let me know that they were moving on with one of the other candidates. She seemed frustrated when telling me (we had built up a good rapport over the past couple weeks of conversations, so I could understand). She said it wasn't my experience, but the fact that I asked for compensation in the range of what they had posted, and that it “Showed I cared more about money than the company I would work for.” She tried to fight for me, but apparently someone was willing to take a lesser compensation instead
Umm, what?! This is the first time I've ever come across this in my career, has this happened to anyone else? I hate “Workplace Culture” so much.
TLDR; Because I asked for money in compensation range, company said nope!
