I started working for a big firm recently. It’s 100% not what I want to do in life. (still figuring that part out, but I need to pay the bills until then).
Like a lot of big firms lately, the training has become automated. A few weeks of “interactive” videos which basically tell you how to do your job, with no real life examples. Being honest, I’m more confused about the job after doing them. They know I’m coming in with little experience in the field but assured me it’s fine as full training will be provided.
I’ve been doing some tasks now and I just can’t grasp them, they are alien compared to what I was shown in my training. The “training buddy” showing me how to do specific parts of the job is great at what he does, but keeps assuming my base knowledge is higher than it really is. I do communicate to him and remind him to show me things as if I know nothing. It’s not his fault, to be honest I think someone more qualified should be in this position. I’m also WFH and his calendar is pretty full, so he will show me something to do, then be busy for 3 hours so I have nobody to ask questions to in the meantime. By the time he’s available again, I’ve gone around in circles and ended back up at the start of my confusion.
Anyways, I am rambling. Just came here to vent about work haha. I just wish companies would put more effort into onboarding, training and pointing out directions new starters can go in if they’re confused and stuck. I’m not getting good vibes from this company.
