The 40 hour workweek was never meant to be for two adults in the same household working full time. And yet here we are, most people barely scraping by, with little to no free time to actually enjoy life. Why aren’t more people talking about reducing the workweek?
Productivity is at an all time high. Companies are making more than ever. Depression and suicide rates are increasing constantly. Yet the most “progressive” thing I’m seeing done is companies allowing their employees to take 3 day weekends by getting their 40 hours by Thursday.
But what good does that actually do? Sure, a long weekend would be amazing, but Monday – Thursday you’ll work 10 hour days. Factor in commute, errands, eating, cleaning, and other daily tasks and how much time is actually left? None? Just collapse in to bed while 4/7ths of your life is completely wasted?
Why aren’t we pushing for reduced hours? Why aren’t people valuing their time the way companies value their money, as in always asking for more? When did we as a society decide a company’s profits were more valuable than the single life we get to live? And why are we so ready to donate even more of that time to see not even a penny more in our paychecks?
This sub is so eager to point out everything that’s wrong with society, yet it feels like we’re powerless to actually fix these things. When are we all going to finally come together and decide on a course of action to take back our rights as human beings? The right to food and shelter and time to actually live.
Why aren’t we pushing?!
