Sitting here on break right now, thinking about what my boss asked me this morning and how he couldn't see it being a ridiculous request.
I work in manufacturing. Every different job/line on the floor plays exactly the same amount.
My boss came to me today with what he called an “opportunity”.
He told me they would like me to learn all the jobs/lines on the floor. That way I could help fill in and cover whenever needed.
That's eight different jobs and 16-20 weeks of training for all them, including getting licensed to drive a forklift.
All for no pay increase.
I flat out asked him, “Why would I do that?”
He said it was a great opportunity, and thought one day I could definitely be a supervisor.
Not interested.
Supervisors are salaried and make 70k a year, sometimes working 60+ hours a week.
I'm hourly, making 52k a year, doing my one single job. If I wanted to work OT, I could. But I always turn it down. If I did want to though, I could make their salary or higher in OT with a quarter of the responsibility.
Anyways, my supervisor was shocked I turned down this “great offer” and his boss even came to talk to me about it half an hour later, saying I was making a mistake.
I've seen them do this in the past with other people, and there is zero benefit. Guess what happens when you know every job and your particular line is having a slow day? Instead of getting to sit there and take it easy, you get moved to somewhere busy.
No thanks.
You want me to learn eight more jobs? I want another $2 an hour per job. I'll jump on it then.
For the same pay though?
Get the hell out of here.
