My kids’ school is apparently A rated but they are killing me. When my daughter was nearing the end of 8th grade she learned she could apply for IB program that started in 9th. I told her it was a very rigorous course load, I did research online and explained that she is obsessed with getting all A’s (I’m not- it’s all her) and that she struggles as it is, needing my help with homework. She seemed to agree and didn’t apply. Fast forward to 9th grade and most of her teachers were not teaching. They just let the kids run wild and she wasn’t learning anything except in biology.
She wants to learn but has a hard time because teachers aren’t teaching and they keep quitting. She finds out all her friends are in IB and that their teachers actually teach, they get study hall hours and lockers even though all their classes are right next door to each other.
This year she’s a sophomore and I inquire if she can move to IB because I believe she has improved a lot and might be able to handle it now, only to find out that she could have IF she had applied fall of 9th grade. We were never aware of this option and now it’s too late.
She comes home the other day and tells me she can’t join NHS because apparently you have to already have 30 hours of volunteer work done. Many sophomores are now excluded from joining this year because they were never told of this requirement last year.
They finally replaced the lockers over the summer (last year they Didn’t get them bc they were supposed to be replaced. They weren’t and she spent all year lugging a 24 lb backpack around school.) well the day before school starts they are told there is a problem with the locks the contractor used and now it’s on hold again. It’s been almost a month since school started and no word on the lockers.
This week we’ve been getting texts from school about how kids need to be in certain places in the morning but no mention why. My daughter says they are doing the state testing but no mention of that in the parent text.
Half the bathrooms are constantly closed. There are fights in the ones that are open so often that I’ve lost track of how many times she and my son have told me they have had to dodge fights to get out.
Six girls will lock themselves in the handicap stall and eat lunch in the bathroom.
And to top it all off, she wants to be a veterinarian. The school has a vet program and FFA. She loves working with the animals. If she completed the requirements when she graduates she’ll have her vet tech license. The problem is her 23 year old fresh out of college teacher is more interested in making certain students her best friends than teaching. She chats with them in class, let’s them call her by her first name, and even goes out to eat with some of them. She doesn’t do anything about the few kids who neglect their animals. Instead she does their job while the other kids are out there working.
She recently told some kids she was supposed to be fired and didn’t think she was coming back this year but the person left the school before it was official. I can’t talk to the teacher about my concerns bc she will tell her “friends” that my daughter has to work with bc they are students!!!
I need to know if I would just be considered a Karen for complaining to the school since all I see online these days is how stressed teachers are. The school is smack in the middle class neighborhood. This is not a low income school. Thoughts?
