wish to ask for your opinion on something I think is illegal

Hi. I had joined a company in Electronics engineering and have been working for just above a year now. They pay OK for a startup. In my probation period, I had job related to my domain. However exactly a week after I got the permanent position, I was given some “big project” which one or two months down I realized was a mechanical engineer's or a layout designer's job. I was given no such work in the probation period or asked anything remotely relevant in the job description and the interviews, only asked of and trained on circuit design (2day crash course on layouts but that was just to be familiar with the tool, others got it too.) when I could leave without notice. This feels illegal, is it? I have a job lined up and intend to leave but the notice period is a bit big(5 months). I actually…

This feels illegal, is it? I have a job lined up and intend to leave but the notice period is a bit big(5 months). I actually didn't expect getting screwed like this and kind of liked my job before this sudden change. I would speak to a lawyer but just wanted to check if I was right or I have no recourse here and have to sit it through.
