I began working for an IT company back in September 2022. During the interview I was very open with the fact that I would be moving due to my husbands job, and would need the role to be remote. All went well, and I was offered the job.
After three months off office work my husband was relocated and we moved over 200 miles away. I discussed the transition to a permanent remote role with HR and my manager at the time. Both of them agreed that they would be happy for me to work remotely 'for the foreseeable future', with a 6 month review lined up to discuss any 'pain points, but nothing was ever written and it was all agreed verbally (dispite me asking multiple times for an actual contract extension)'. Around this time I got a new manager, and my probation was pushed back due to changes in the company.
Over the last 6 months ive been asking for my probation review, which is now well over due, but each time I've asked they've pushed it back.
Yesterday (Friday afternoon) I got a call from HR saying my initial 6 months has ended, and the company are looking at not keeping me on. Theyre looking to terminate my contract within the next 2 months, but the sooner the better. This has honestly come as a huge shock, as I've been chasing and chasing my probation review, and have had nothing but high praise from my new manager. HRs argument is that the new manager wasn't involved with our original 6 month agreement, but my argument is that our original agreement was only verbal, and I've had NOTHING in writing to say my work has been unsatisfactory or otherwise. The only reason they're looking to get rid of me is because they 'want a face in the office'.
I've since spoken to my new manager, who said he is heartbroken over the decision and had no idea this was happening. He gave me Friday afternoon off, and we've rescheduled a meeting for next week where we can 'discuss a time line for me to transition from the company'.
The real kick in the gut?
Our postponed wedding is in October. Two months away. So they've really put me between a rock and a hard place when it comes to searching for a new job.
What can I do/say to help preserve this dying job a little longer and ensure that I at least have an income until October?
