Antiwork

Work left me on read about essential training for a month. Now I’m being pulled into a meeting to see where I’m at with planning my own professional development.

Started a new role in September. My job requires me to handle hazardous substances, including but not limited to; chemicals, microbial cultures and radioactive sources. My specialisation is in Chemistry, but I am completely untrained when it comes to Biology and Physics. I raised this issue with Human Resources, as I was instructed to do by a manager, including dates, locations and suppliers that would offer the necessary training I need. They did not respond to the email. After approaching the deadline for those courses, I messaged HR and my manager again as I had yet to receive confirmation. The appropriate paperwork includes having to arrange and budget the training and travel, basically all the legwork, then I submit the form so they can…

After approaching the deadline for those courses, I messaged HR and my manager again as I had yet to receive confirmation. They responded, rather coldly, that I needed to go through proper procedure, fill out appropriate paperwork and submit the form with at least two weeks notice.

The appropriate paperwork includes having to arrange and budget the training and travel, basically all the legwork, then I submit the form so they can call the training organisers to apply for the course.

In two weeks time the courses will be over. I've literally missed the window because no one got back to me, and the “proper procedure” was never explained to me when I initially asked for the training.

I got an email from my manager this morning, asking where I was with the forms and am being pulled into a meeting on Monday.

I would like to stress, I made it abundantly clear at all stages of the interview process and during my far too brief induction (which is still incomplete) that this training was absolutely necessary. And we have an externally ran audit coming up soon.

I have never been turned off from an employer so soon into a job in my life.
