Something pretty shitty and toxic happened to my company last year when they brought in a manager to slot between the director, who was super nice, and my manager, who let us self manage and upskilled us and empowered us to do our jobs to the point that we received awards and recognition for our work. Life was bliss and I planned to retire there.
So new manager came in and announced we needed a “shake up” – if I could see their job description I would guess it said something along the lines of “needlessly trim fat to make it look like you had any real impact on the company”. During covid they made outlandish requests to get our office fully open and functioning at maximum capacity when everyone was advised to stay at home. Nice director was taking a back seat and said new manager was allowed to call the shots, so we were left to fight the fire on our own. My manager, under new manager, completely lost his mojo for the job. Started day drinking, sending us to important meetings because he couldn’t be bothered, and generally stopped watering his proverbial crops.
Anyways new manager calls us all in to say that an “exciting opportunity” has arisen for us to have new job roles in the company – we thought they meant meaningful promotions and an adequate pay rise, but what they actually did was make us all redundant and force us to “reapply” for “new” jobs with our old job descriptions and extra work piled on for no extra money.
Guess who has a new job at a different company, with a months notice paid in lieu til my new job starts, and shitty manager doesn’t have a single member of staff left to run the shop while they rehire every position posted?
