I work at a family business that sells used car parts. My gpa started around the 60's. They had over 30 employee's then. Now there is less than 10. He got very wealthy doing this. But his customers and other people caught on that he was overcharging and basically buying the market out with cars and paying to much for the inventory. So in a sense they started boycotting him. Then he seemed to get ahead of himself in the early 90's and later. Had to continue to put his savings in every year.
He's 87, I'm 37. About 7 years ago my uncle j who worked the office selling parts, retired and I moved to the office to sell parts. At this point it was still a dying business. Don't get me wrong it was still a business that could sell just the pure inventory for millions….
Now there is 2 people selling parts in the office me and my ex uncle g who is really bad at his job and does basically nothing. But does everything my gpa says so he thinks he's a good worker. He makes way more for doing way less. And tbh he only ever worked there because he was married to my aunt, who woke up one day and said she didn't want to be married anymore. She works there and it's awkward.
I never finished college but I did pay attention and have more schooling than everyone else there combined.
So I change the computer and inventory systems. Fixed the quality control.Get connected to wholesaler's and start making this business profitable again. This was a few years ago now. The 2nd year up there I sold over 500k to one client.
He doesn't like it and thinks we are doing too much work and not making money yet he doesn't have to put on his life savings into it. That boggles me.
So right now I do more work than anyone else has at this position. I buy all the cars, 90% usually double or triple there money in the first 1 years. Last year was different where I was able to make my money back in the cars within a few months after buying them. Actually most cars I bought were paid for by just scrapping the converters, which just a bonus. We do specialize in foreign. I am pretty fluent in pre 1991 Mercedes.
I also sell over 75 % of the parts and that's me being generous. My grandfather who is partially blind now sits behind me and basically yells or mocks me for selling the parts too low. It takes a toll mentally and physically on me. I have basically also recruited these “boycotted” customers back by selling the parts at a reasonable price.
Now they want me to do more work and Inventory cars with no raise in wage. I scoffed at them.
I do know this, last year that he had to put 20k into the profit sharing because the company made so much money. I do not know the specifics.
My jobs would be broken into 2 separate jobs at any other yard.
I could go to another yard and make more money especially if it was % based on sales.
2 years ago I even got my father a 10 dollar raise.
Last year in September they gave every person there a raise except for me.
I still have not received one.
One big thing that I never receive and would probably make a big difference is praise. I cannot remember the last time anyone said you are doing a good job and we are glad to have you here. Instead complaining about being to busy.
So right now I think they need me more than I need them, I am mentally and physically drained and quite honestly hurt by my gpa mocking me about not doing it his way. But I have proven results.
Right now I haven't gone into work for a few days in a holdout to see if something will change.
