I worked there for just over a year. This company is honestly one of the worst places to work at if you value the idea of living bast age 30 in a workplace. I honestly don't know how those old people have worked as greeters for decades and don't miss a day.
When I started there, I worked in the apparel department, and I mainly just stocked and folded clothes. I had some issues with a coworker where I had to be moved, because they don't believe in telling people to not be prejudice against gay people, I guess (she was much older than me, probably in her 60s). I was ultimately moved to the front end to be a cashier.
I honestly didn't mind being a cashier at first, it was pretty easy for me since I liked being able to work the self-checks and get to walk around more. It was also just easier to help people there for me, since learning about the machines was definitely something that helped me with their problems. And then, we had a MASSIVE remodel at our store, floors ripped up, bathrooms up front closed, break room closed, and often one end of the store exits was blocked, all for a remodel. We also got all-new machines for the self-checks that were insanely difficult to learn how to use, because even the team leads didn't want to help us learn about it.
After the remodel, everything went to absolute shit, and I don't know how one simple thing, meant to improve our work, set us back that badly. I was absolutely doing more than what my job description called for, including other people's jobs that I was not getting paid for. I remember one of our team leads not coming in when she was scheduled, and since I was the only adult cashier that early in the morning, I decided to get someone who had numbers to the key vault to help me get the office keys so that we could get tills out for the registers, so the minors wouldn't be alone at the self checkout, with all the insane people that come in at 6am. I was basically told that instead of doing this, I basically should have done nothing until the team lead got there. At 8am.
I won't lie and tell you that I was perfect at this job, or that I never missed a day, because I did, several times that year (Oh no /s). But I had reached the max amount of points several times because of health issues I have, ones that I can't exactly get treated. (Stomach and intestinal issues, mainly). Some days I could barely even think of getting up to go into work because how much pain I was in, and I couldn't do anything other than take something for the pain and get rest. When pulled into the office for my attendance, I tried to explain my health issues. They basically told me to bring in medical paperwork that said I “could take extra breaks if I needed to”, which wasn't going to help my problems at all. When I told them I could bring in my urgent care and ER papers, they said “they don't take doctors notes”… What the fuck did you want me to show you then? My internal organs?
This happened two more times before I finally just got our new coach to take my occurrences down, and I eventually just started coming in despite my pain, because I wanted to keep my job since I genuinely did enjoy working and helping people. I came in to work one day with severe pain, and informed my team lead that I may have to leave early since I was in a lot of pain. Her answer? She stuck me on the register for 4 hours with no break. When our second lead came in, they pulled me into the office and told me that they would fire me for occurrences if I left early, so I just gave in and said I would stay since they put me directly on the spot. She told me to go take my lunch break and get back on the register when I got back.
Like 3 months after that, two of my occurrences had fallen off and I decided to take a day off to get some things done around the house, so that my mother didn't have to do them. I came back into work the following Sunday, just to be told I was being fired for occurrences after not having gotten any in over 6 months. They said that the day I called in was “an event day”, despite it not saying that anywhere on the calendar. I was followed around by the AP lead while I was trying to calm myself down and get my stuff while my mom came up to get me, and basically had to wait outside in 90 degree heat for almost an hour, because she wasn't going to stop harassing me.
I was sent home with a “we appreciate everything you did here” and no raise for over a year because of other departments having a problem with shrink, despite them all still getting a raise that year.
A year of doing other people's jobs and doing shit no one else would do, and this is what you get. Then it's not even considered enough experience for any other jobs when you apply, because you can't put in leadership experience, even if you trained 60% of the new hires, since you were still employed under being a cashier.
