Working in a church is the most toxic environment I have every encountered

I do not attend this church and have no affiliation. I am a part time secretary for 8 hours a week. I have previously worked in a jail. This is worse. The pastor just resigned and I thought things would get better. Before she left, everyone was actually screaming at each other in the church and arguing to the point where I thought there were going to be physical fights. I do not see things getting better and am shocked at how the church is run. Since there is no one in charge, I am now at the mercy of old angry bitter adults who are acting like petty children. One of them stole the membership book. Another stole the personnel files and shredded all of them out of spite. The worst thing is that everyone in this church seems to have a key and they are going through all…

The worst thing is that everyone in this church seems to have a key and they are going through all the drawers after hours and just trashing the place. Since I am there once a week, I can always expect some random old person to come walking in and rant about how much they hate the church/members and ask me to fix it for them.

My food has gone missing, my personal items have been stolen, and someone got ahold of my private cell number. This is when shit got weird.

Since this is a Presbyterian church, there are a few people left on session. They all decided to “share” my personal cell number during the session meeting. So now I am receiving phone calls at home during my personal time and random voicemails at all hours. Some of these people are borderline dementia. They have nothing else to do. So, they call and leave weird voicemail messages at all hours asking me to help move furniture or begging me to join the church. One member called me 17 times last night.

There is no human resources. There is no one to escalate to.

I walk in once a week, print a newsletter, take care of donations, and leave. I have recently been asked to come shovel, drive people to and from church, plunge toilets and fix frozen pipes. The members expect me to do this for free.

This is the most bizarre and toxic job I have ever had. Thanks for reading and heed my warning.
