Working on a salary.

Does working on a salary automatically mean the company can work you whenever? Am I giving up my free time by signing from hourly to salary? I feel like by jumping from hourly to salary that the company is now only getting 40 hours or less from me while I was on hourly, I would happily do overtime for that extra money. I was paid $25 an hour so overtime was $37.50. Now with my salary, it breaks down to $31.50 an hour if I only do 40 hours. Not willing to give up more than 40 hours now since I'm not going to be compensated for any additional time.
