Working to pay for life, but Volunteering to do what I love

In order to pay for the cost of living, I work a job and get overtime as often as possible just so I can pay the bills, which is becoming increasingly difficult as inflation continues. A lot of us do this… Today while reading another post on here, I recognized that a lot of us work in jobs with little real world value. At companies that could cease to exist and there would be very little, if any, actual impact on the world. A job for the sake of a job. Which got me thinking about how much I love what I have done for free (as a volunteer), for the past several years. I volunteer at a Food Pantry, meeting with people in need, while we provide them with donated groceries to help meet those needs. Today while reading another post on here, I recognized that a lot of us work in jobs with little real world value.

I also serve as a youth counselor, where we talk through difficult situations and questions of life that students encounter as they navigate their teenage years.

At least to me and the people I meet each week, these things have significant real world value.

Why does it seem that our world places value in the wrong things?
