Basically the title.
At work today my employer pulled aside a sizeable group of people, a lot of them who were relatively new hires, and told them about some upcoming optional training for “position” on a special “team”.
After telling us about it, and asking “So! Who's up for the challenge?”, one person did bluntly ask how much the pay increase was going to be, to which the supervisor basically laughed in their face and said that they should feel grateful for the “opportunity” that they are being offered since they're new, and there was no way they were going to the client and saying that their employees didn't want to take this “challenge” because it didn't offer more compensation.
Most of us get paid minimum wage to do the job of about 10 people already (yes, it's probably the work you're already assuming), and this “challenge” is basically to add the additional work of two more people on top of it, for no wage increase… just the “opportunity” to be “grateful”. Yeah, no one took them up on the “offer” / “challenge”.
They even tried playing the 'man' card too, which made my jaw drop. “You're a man aren't you? Aren't you up for the challenge?”. Whenever people denied this wonderful opportunity, they were even questioned about why they didn't want to do it and chided about why they weren't taking it.
I'm happy my coworkers stood their ground.
