You shouldn’t expected to be rewarded for exceeding expectations…

So today I attended a management meeting about the changes in our yearly appraisal process. We work on a grading system and each job is allocated a grade in which you start at the bottom and work you way up the grade. It’s not a huge range but it’s a range at least. On top of this there was a bonus scheme which was awarded to those who exceeded expectations for their job/grade. This has been scrapped this year. All of my staff are at the top of their grade and have all gone well above and beyond. I now have to tell them that, for them at least, their work was for nothing(apart from the business I work for will benefit). They won’t be rewarded. I’m expected to tell them that the work they’ve done should be satisfaction enough. Or offer career growth training (bear in mind my team…

It’s just utter bullshit and provides no motivation for people to do more.
